How Big Is Large Print, Really?
Font sizes are given in points, but nobody pictures a page in points. This guide translates the sizes Clarence Edgehill prints in – from 18 pt up to 100 pt – into inches, millimeters and everyday objects. The heights below are measured from our own printed books, so you can picture the real page before you buy.
What a “point” actually is
A point is a printer's unit of measurement: 1 point = 1/72 of an inch (about 0.35 mm). So a 72 pt font takes up roughly one inch of vertical space.
One catch: the point size measures the full height of the type – including the space for letters that reach up (like “h”) and hang down (like “g”). A capital letter is usually only around 70% of the point size. That's why a “one inch font” (72 pt) prints capital letters closer to two-thirds of an inch tall.

Picture the difference
Every letter in a 100 pt word search grid is roughly the size of a quarter. A whole found word can span most of an 8.5 × 11.7 inch page – a page slightly bigger than a sheet of printer paper.

How big is a 50 pt font?
A capital letter in 50 pt type is about 12.2 mm (just under half an inch) tall. That's roughly three times the height of the letters in a typical 16 pt “large print” book.
How big is a 100 pt font in inches?
The full 100 pt type body is about 1.4 inches, and a printed capital letter comes out at just under 1 inch (24.4 mm) tall – about the size of a US quarter.
What does “pt” mean in font sizes?
“pt” is short for point – 1/72 of an inch. So 72 pt type stands about one inch tall on the page, and 100 pt about 1.4 inches.
Why do printed letters look smaller than the point size suggests?
